GravelRiders update

It is towards the end of September and I have moved away from the States and we are in the middle of the Camino de Santiago in Spain. From there, it’s wide open. Life’s better out here, all good in fact.

The historic and thrilling Zandvoort circuit welcomed the Formula 1 paddock once again for the 15th round of the 2025 World Championship, with practice sessions setting the stage for an electrifying race weekend. After Lando Norris stunned the field by topping the timesheets in the first practice session, all eyes turned to how teams would respond in FP2 amid the challenging coastal winds and the circuit’s unique banked corners.

The second practice run offered a fascinating shake-up, as several frontrunners pushed their limits to decipher the perfect setup tailored to Zandvoort’s technical demands. This session emphasized tire management and aerodynamic balance, with drivers experimenting with different lines on the demanding track, eager to extract every tenth of a second. The humid air and unpredictable gusts along the dunes added another layer of complexity, testing the teams’ real-time adaptability and engineers’ calculations.

From a strategic viewpoint, FP2 revealed how crucial track position will be come qualifying, especially given the narrow nature of the Dutch circuit where overtaking opportunities are limited. Teams that optimized their car balance during this session appeared better poised to challenge for grid advantage, which could make all the difference in the tightly contested midfield tussle and the fight among championship contenders.

It’s also worth noting the standout performances from some surprise entries who closed the gap to the usual front runners — an encouraging sign of increased competitiveness this season. The data gathered during FP2 suggests that tire degradation and fuel load management will significantly influence race strategy, potentially shaking up traditional pit stop plans and encouraging bold calls from the pit walls.

As anticipation builds towards qualifying and the race itself, the Dutch Grand Prix continues to showcase why it’s a fan favorite, blending high-speed thrills with technical mastery. Teams now face the challenge of translating these practice insights into performance under pressure, and it will be fascinating to see who truly masters Zandvoort’s demanding corners and lively atmosphere when it counts.
